How To Care For Your Eyes After LASIK

Eye Drops
Start your eyedrops anytime within 6 hours of your procedure. To avoid washing out the previously applied drops, it is best to separate the drops by approximately 5 minutes.

Ocuflox
Antibiotic to protect your eye against infection. Use 4 times per day for 3-4 days as instructed. Inflamase Forte - Steroid to reduce inflammation. Use every hour first full day, then 4 times per day.

Lubrication
Lubricating drops will be provided for your comfort (Genteal/TearGel). Use 1-2 drops frequently - as often as every hour. If eye dryness or irritation persists, increase use of lubricating drops.

Eye Protection
DO NOT RUB, SQUEEZE OR CLOSE YOUR EYE FORCEFULLY FOR 1 FULL WEEK.

Solarshield (wrap around sunglasses)
These are provided to help you avoid rubbing your eyes.

Eyeshield
The eyeshield is to be taped over your eye before sleep for the first 3 days or as directed by your doctor.

Activities
Avoid make-up for 3 days
Avoid dirty environments for 3 days
No swimming and sports for 5 days
No driving until permitted by your doctor

Expectations
It is normal for vision to be blurry and fluctuate for the first few days and to gradually improve over the next 4 weeks. Complete visual recovery takes at least 3-6 months.
Your eye may sting and tear for the first day. Lubrication and time will improve your comfort. Tylenol, Advil, or other similar pain reliever that agrees with you may be taken if necessary. Ativan may be prescribed to help you sleep, if needed.
Your eye may be red with spots of superficial blood which will disappear over 2-4 weeks. Your lids may be slightly swollen initially.
Reading may be difficult initially. If you are over 35, temporary reading glasses may suffice until your vision has stabilized. Then permanent prescription readers may be considered if necessary.
Normal healing involves some regression (partial return to your original prescription). Therefore, you are deliberately slightly overcorrected initially to allow for this regression. If regression is significant, enhancement (retreatment) may be performed 3-6 months after the initial LASIK procedure. A disposable contact lens or glasses may be worn, if needed, after 1 week following LASIK until the time is right for enhancement.
Please remember that everyone heals differently. Your process will be monitored at regularly scheduled visits and your management will be decided accordingly.
